Tassajara Prep – New Charter High School Planned in Dublin

As the fastest growing city in the San Francisco Bay Area, Dublin has a population expected to expand more than 69 percent, adding 34,600 and reaching more than 81,000 residents in the next 25 years.  And the need for a second high-caliber high school is increasing besides Dublin High School, the city’s sole comprehensive public high school, on the west side of town.

Back in September 2009, a group called Dublin Learning Corporation announced plans to open  Tassajara Preparatory High School (Tassajara Prep), an independently-operated, fully credentialed public educational institution.  The goal is to by August 2012 offer all Dublin parents a new choice and all the advantages of a private education at a tuition-free public school.

What Are Charter Schools?

Charter schools are tuition-free public schools that are responsive to students’ needs and are held accountable for improved student achievement. Charter schools are exempt from many of the state educational codes governing school districts. They are free for students to attend and can be approved to operate by a number of governmental education agencies.  There are currently 750 charter schools serving 276,000 charter school students in California.

Why Tassajara Prep?

  • Competitive, tuition-free high school
  • Comprehensive high school experience within a small school environment
  • Independently operated by educators, parents, and community members
  • Fully credentialed faculty with performance-based pay and annual merit bonuses
  • Expanded choice of Advanced Placement classes and extracurricular enrichment programs
  • Collaborative learning environment for students, teachers, and parents
  • High level of parent participation and influence
  • Integration of cutting edge technology in teaching and learning

The group plans to submit its charter school petition to the Dublin school district in December.  Some of milestones are,

  • Obtain Petition Approval – December 2010
  • Secure Interim Facility – July 2011
  • First of School – August 2012
  • Open Permanent High School Facility – August 2015
